In order to operate with minimum bureaucracy, you need managers who have the ability to function on their
own. For that reason. Wilfred Olschewski holds monthly management training sessions for the managers at APEX Microtechnology
Corp., in Tucson.
In one recent session, for example, a consultant focused on the art of hiring. "Everybody had been doing it
differently and inefficiently," says Olschewski. "the consultant taught people how to get information out of applicants without getting
too personal." The same consultant coached salespeople on the use of body language. "That sort of thing comes naturally to some people,
but not to others. I figured it could only help make everybody more observant."
In the future, Olschewski plans to bring in an accountant for a session on reading financial statements - "It's
something you have to know to be a good all-around manager" - and other experts will follow. At less than $200 for each 45 - minute
session, the program, he figures, is a bargain.
