A cryptographic system in which messages
are encrypted with a key spilt into two parts. One of these parts is
publicly available and the other is private. A message sent with one kind of
key can only be decrypted by the other. Public key cryptography uses complex
mathematical algorithms based on large prime numbers, and in its most
advanced forms is regarded as more or less unbreakable even with the most
powerful computers. |
