A high-speed packet-switched network
protocol, often used in local and wide area networks. Unlike other
packet-switched
connections, which use data segments of fixed size, frame relay connections
put data into variable-sized units (called frames) before transmission.
Delivery of these frames can be prioritised, so that companies can choose
levels of service quality in which some frames are deemed more important
than others. Frame relay connections take advantage of unused bandwidth to
optimise data transmission, via a special circuit called a permanent of an
always leased line without the associated high cost, but they are not
ideally suited to voice and video transmission. |
