Describes a company with its roots and assets
in the "old economy" that also exploits the power of the internet to expand
and streamline its business. A good example is Barnes & Noble, a traditional
bookseller that was forced to embrace the web following the success of
Amazon.
" pure-play" internet companies can still outperform
their slower moving real-world competitors in some areas, as the success of
companies like Amazon proves. But recent history shows how few internet
companies have been able to make it on their own. Most large companies now
have some kind of web-based presence and are capitalising on their
advantages over net purists. The lower cost of customer acquisition have
given real-world companies of all kinds a more solid footing for their
online ventures. A good example of this in the grocery sector, where many
internet-only companies failed to make a lasting impression. |
