An expression coined in the mid-1990s to
describe the apparent compression of time in the internet world; that is,
the length of time it takes internet technologies to evolve to the same
extent that other technologies might in a calendar year. Tim Berners-Lee,
creator of the world wide web, once estimated a web year to be about three
month in the real world. The expression has lost favour with those who
deplore the bureaucracy and legal barriers that now stand in the way of
developments. No longer, they say, is it possible for people simply to write
code and release products on a whim, and web years may now be even longer
than real ones. |
