Broadly, a Utopian web equivalent of dialtone: continuous, reliable, round-the-clock access to the internet. Sun
Microsystems's definition specifies that WebTone is always "on", like the
telephone; that it provides services to business and consumers via web-based
network; and that it is available to a wide array of devices such as phones, pdas and perhaps even kitchen implements, such as microwave ovens, at any
time. Of these three stipulations, only the first is currently a reality,
and then only to those who subscribe to an always-on service such as adsl. |
