Windows Media Audio, Microsoft's
answer to the dominance of the popular mp3 audio format. Microsoft
says that wma and its digital video cousin, wmv, are more
efficient mechanisms for distributing digital content than the decade-old
variants based on mpeg technology; its files are smaller, making them
quicker to send and receive across the internet, and many claims have been
made for their superior quality. None of this has impressed the world's
amateur media enthusiasts, who continue to record and distribute mp3
files by the million in preference to anything that Microsoft has to offer. |
