Wired Equivalent Privacy, a protocol
designed to secure communications across wi-fi network connections.
Wep uses
advanced encryption techniques to render such communications safe intrusion
by crackers and other mischief makers, but its effectiveness has been called
into questions by several researchers. One group at the University of
California, Berkeley, discovered major security flaws in wep that
might leave companies using wi-fi open to attack. A bigger problem is
that most users of wi-fi equipment, especially domestic users,
install and use it without even switching wep protection on, much to
the delight of drive-by hackers. |
