A portal system that lets people navigate
the web by using their voices rather than their browsers. Voice
portals use speech-recognition technology to decipher verbal requests for
information, and thus have the potential to provide access to the web's vast
store of information without the need for anything more technically
sophisticated than a telephone. Despite this promise, the enduringly
primitive nature of speech-recognition technology is slowing development of
voice portals, and most experts agree that it well be many years before they
are widely used for anything except the most basic call-centre functions.
The latest examples are based on Voicexml, a variant of the
widespread xml standard for exchanging data. |
