Long touted as the miracle technology
that would bring people closer together without the need for them to meet
physically, videoconferencing has yet to make its mark in most industries.
However, despite being hamstrung by bandwidth limitations and cultural
obstacles, it is still alive and kicking, albeit some what feebly. The
internet currently solve very few of its problems, as packet- based
networks are generally unsuitable for delivering video reliably.
Streaming media technologies are also unsuitable for live video content.
Despite all this, many companies continue to market hardware aimed at the
videoconferencing market, and some companies that rely on large numbers of
remote works have invested in dedicated high-speed connections designed for
video. Most videoconferencing currently takes place between individuals
armed with webcams. |
