Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy, a set
of rules for determining who has the right to own a particular domain name.
Udrp was developed by icann to help trademark holders protect
their intellectual property rights and avoid expensive litigation against
cybersquatters. It has been criticised by trademark holders for being
too narrowly focused and ineffectual, and by others who believe that Udrp
gives trademark owners rights that extend beyond the scope of national
laws and that it ignores the essentially stateless nature of the internet.
Icann's attempts to impose its dispute-resolution policy on countries
administering tlds have also attracted criticism from those who
consider it tantamount to the "hijacking" of international trademark law. |
