A technique used to create private
networks on the public systems of the internet. Using tunnelling,
companies can build their own virtual private networks (vpns) without
the need for expensive dedicated systems and leased lines, by
encapsulating a separate network protocol within standard tcp / ip
packets. The Ietf is considering several proposals for a standard
tunnelling protocol, including pptp (point-to-point Tunnelling
Protocol) from Microsoft and Layer 2 Forwarding from Cisco. |
