A program used to access a remote
computer, some internet protocols such as http allow you to
access material on an internet site anonymously, but telnet requires you to
login to a computer with a username and a password. Once
logged on, various facilities may be provided by the host computer,
especially e-mail, as if you were actually sitting at the computer
itself. Most operating system including a telnet client as a standard
part of the furniture. Telnet hosts usually run simple terminal-style,
text-only interfaces with arcane command line interfaces, often running on
top of variants of the unix operating system. Some isps
provide a telnet interface to their mail server, allowing subscribers
to access their e-mail from any machine with a telnet program: that is,
nearly all of them. |
