A web-surfing enthusiast of advancing
years. Older web users are becoming more interesting to advertisers and
retailers. According to most surveys, they still constitute one of the
fastest growing demographic groups in the global internet market. In the UK,
a 2002 survey by bnrb, a research organisation, found that 83% of
retired people now spend more time online than pursuing other
interests. Many other studies show that older people use the web more often,
stay online longer and visit more websites than younger users, making
them irresistible to advertisers. They also have more money and own more
credit cards, and are thus good targets for sales of everything from
high-tech gadgets to cars. E-mail is especially popular among silver
surfers, and many chat systems now include rooms for the over-50s. |
