Quality of service, a term used to
describe the reliability (or otherwise) of a network, based on an underlying
assumption that it can always be improved. QOS is difficult to guarantee on
packet-switched networks as the volume of traffic and behaviour
of packets is hard to predict, but some kinds of network connection have
special facilities that make it easier. Companies using ATM, for example,
can choose a level of service that suits their specific requirements. A
special protocol, rsvp (reservation Protocol), can be used to reserve
channels on some networks for use by time-sensitive, high-bandwidth
applications such as video. |
