The theft of information from a
website, usually with the intention of boosting traffic to a competing
site. By incorporating stolen information into their own sites and
submitting their new pages to search engines, pagejackers can fool
prospective visitors to their victims' sites into clicking on a link
to their own sites, or, more often, redirect them to a third-party site,
which pays the pagejacker for new visitors. Many companies offering
search-engine optimisation services use pagejacking techniques to drive
traffic to their clients' sites, receiving a small payment for each new
visitor. Victims of pagejacking are often unaware that their material has
been copied and stolen. Some big companies like Disney and Discovery Channel
have been pagejacked, and the technique is widely used by pornography
sites to steal traffic from other, higher-profile competitors. |
