A generally pejorative term for someone
of above-average intelligence but who has poorly developed social skills and
is sartorially challenged. Nerds are often portrayed as being shy, badly
dressed and incapable of forming normal relationships, especially with
members of the opposite sex. real or not this image has shifted somewhat as
the realisation has grown that nerds are among the most powerful people in
our society. An oft-cited example of this is Bill Gates, for whom nerdism
has not proved a significant disability. Several explanations for the word's
origin have been proposed, the most interesting being that it is the name of
a character in Dr. Seuss's 1995 book if I Ran The Zoo. |
