A browser produced by netscape. Once
the market leader, Navigator's innovation and technical excellence made it
the browser of choice for millions of neophyte internet users. These
characteristics have not been enough to maintain its dominance, and its
market share has been gradually whittled away to below 105 by internet
explorer since Microsoft began giving it away with the windows
operating system.
The software has been in the hands of aol since 1999, and
its fortunes have not improved in the time. Delays in bringing new versions
to market and a reputation for instability have crippled the browser that
helped define the landscape of the web, and aol's much -vaunted
marketing prowess has done nothing to help revive it. Nor has its cause been
helped by the fact that aol continues to supply Internet Explorer,
rather than its own Navigator, as part of its consumer package. version 7 of
the software, based on open source code developed as part of the
mozilla project, was released in 2002. |
