Originally the codename for netscape's
first browser, Mozilla was the name given to the company's
dinosaur-like mascot. Most recently and importantly, it has been use to
describe the family of web browsers based on the open source navigator code.
The Mozilla project is run as an independent group within Netscape, which
moderates the development of improvements to the original browser code.
Mozilla suffered some major setbacks in 1999 when many of the project's
leading lights resigned, citing dissatisfaction with progress and company
culture following the aol takeover in 1998. But the project
continues, and many web users still tout Mozilla and other browsers based on
the Mozilla code as an essential weapon in the battle to save the world from
internet explorer's hegemony. The latest version of Ntscape's browser is
based on open source code from the Mozilla labs. |
