One of the first search engines. Launched in
1995 with technology developed at Carnegie Mellon University, Lycos was
named after the wolf spider family, the Lycosidae. In 1996 Lycos's ipo
made it the youngest company to go public in the history of the nasdaq
stock exchange. The company has diversified widely since its inception,
acquiring several web communities such as Tripod and Angelfire, as well as
e-mail company MailCity. the Hotbot search engine and the hotwired
network. In May 2000 the company announced a $12 billion merger deal with
Terra Networks, a spin-off Telefonica, a Spanish telecoms giant. |
