The link between a customer's telephone
socket and the nearest telephone switch. Each loop is dedicated to a single
customer. Most existing links were designed for voice transmission using
analog devices, rather than modern digital equipment, and still consist of a
pair of copper wires. Local loops are the most unpredictable parts of the
telephone system, as the wires may be old and damaged. This is one potential
barrier to the widescale implementation of new digital technologies such as
adsl, which are partially dependent on the quality of the local loop
cables. |
