Internet Message Access Protocol, a
standard way of retrieving e-mail from a mail server. The main advantage of
imap over older protocols such as pop3 is that users can
manipulate remote mailboxes as if they were on a local machine. This makes
it much easier for recipients to specify how they receive their e-mail. They
can, for example, view just the subject and sender of an e-mail before
deciding whether to download it, or specify that only messages meeting
certain criteria should be viewed. |
