The Internet Content Ratings
Association, an organisation providing guidelines on the rating and
filtering of potentially harmful web content. Originally formed as the
Recreational Software Advisory Council (rsac). Which was designed to
rate computer games according to their level of violence and use of obscene
or offensive language, the icra now helps website owners and creators
of other sorts of material to rate their content on all sorts of
criteria. Unlike many organisations distributing blocking software
and arguing for the removal of offensive content from the web, the icra
does not itself rate anything. Instead it promotes the pics standard,
which lets content owners rate their own material and parents or other
concerned web visitors choose which kinds of content can be displayed in
their browser. |
