A single request for a file as logged by
a web server. When a Browser request an html page, the server must deliver
not just the html code but any associated objects such as image files. Each
one of these counts as a hit, so a single webpage with nine image-common
enough, given the number of graphical elements used for design and navigation
purposes in a typical web page--will generate ten hit. Hits are therefore a
good indicator of the amount of work a server is doing but an unreliable
measure of how many pages are actually being viewed. In the early days of
the web disingenuous marketers used hits as a measure of a site's
popularity. people (especially advertisers) have seen through this ruse and
impressions are now the measure of choice. |
