A protocol used to find information on
the internet. Gopher is said to be named after the mascot of the University
of Minnesota, where it was originally developed. For many years Gopher
provided the easiest way to find information on the internet, but its
popularity has declined with the advent of web technology. Nonetheless, many
of the original archives survive, especially in universities, and can be
accessed with most web Browsers. Gopher is still used extensively by
specialist researchers looking for information not accessible to the main
search engines. |
