A device connecting different networks,
especially those using different standards or protocols. Gateway are an
essential part of the internet, as they allow systems that know nothing
about each other to exchange information. A good example is an e-mail
gateway which connects two different proprietary e-mail systems. allowing
the users of each to communicate as if they were on the same network.
Gateways typically reside on a dedicated server, which may also host
a firewall and proxy server. |
