An abusive communication from a fellow
internet user, usually in a newsgroup but sometimes by e-mail or in a chat
forum. Many things can trigger a flame. Common causes are failure to observe
netiquette, ignorance of a faq and simple stupidity, or
intemperance on either side. Flames often induce considerable shock in
fist-time recipients, who may be surprised by the vehemence and
forthrightness of the attack. Braver individuals may respond in kind, which
may ultimately result in escalation to a full-scale flame war. Such frank
exchanges of views are generally discouraged by the local community,
but they can be tremendous fun for a lurker. |
