A program (or part of one) that examines a message
for specified criteria and then processes it accordingly. A good example is
represented by the rules in many e-mail packages that allow a user to
determine what happens to each incoming message. For example, e-mail from
anybody at economist.com can be placed automatically in a folder called
"Economist", or all messages without subjects can be deleted without being
