A term used to describe the convergence
of the internet, broadband and wireless technologies in a way that enables
users to remain continuously connected to the web from almost any device.
Viewed by some as the next logical progression of internet technologies, the
Evernet promises to connect not just pcs, pdas and phones to the web
but household appliances, cars and office equipment too. This vision of
uninterrupted connectivity currently has little technical underpinning,
although many new technologies such as bluetooth are already making some of
its ideas possible. The real barrier to its emergence is a lack of the
bandwidth required to connect hundreds of millions of people and devices
simultaneously. widespread adoption of always-on connections such as adsl
and, in particular, the wireless gprs and umts 3g
standards, may hasten the Evernet's arrival, assuming that the companies
providing the relevant services do not run out of money or steam first. |
