A program that converts data from one
from to another, often with the aim of reducing its size and shortening
download times. In digital audio technology the best-known example is an mp3
encoder, which converts a sound recording (often in the windows wav
format) into a much smaller, but still near-cd quality, mp3
file. Encoders are also used to convert and optimise digital video files.
Fierce competition exists between Microsoft, which wants everyone to
encode their digital music and video into its own w m a and w m v
audio formats, and other digital content providers, who prefer to
rely on industry standards. |
