A violent computer game created by id
Software. Doom was the first game to exploit the try-before-you-buy software
distribution model now accepted as standard practice by thousands of
software companies. Instead of buying the whole game unseen ,players could
download the first third of the game free of charge from websites and
bulletin boards, providing a teaser which proved irresistible to
millions of games around the world.
id's creation was largely
responsible for the popularity of online gaming. Designed originally
for solo play, it also included multiplayer facilities for local area
networks. Its successor, Quake, added internet-based play, allowing
anyone with a net connection to join games on one of hundreds of Quake
servers around the world. Nearly all Contemporary games now offer similar
facilities. |
