The constituent information of a
website of other source. Content can take many forms, including text,
sound, video, animation and numerical information. As many organisations
have found, the process of accumulating content is expensive and
time-consuming, irrespective of its subject. Few web users will pay for it
as there is a vast amount of information available free on the web, and
businesses that depend on the sale of content have been proved unrealistic
time and time again. Even the biggest organisations have had their fingers
burnt by the content issue. Microsoft, for example, was unable to
persuade subscribers to its msn service to pay for the content it
offered separately.
Despite the unwillingness of people to part with
their money, some websites are returning to the paid-content model as
advertising revenues have become less reliable. Meanwhile,
pornography continues to be the only form of content for which people
seem happy to pay. (see also Microcontent.) |
