A technique for reducing the size of
files, commonly used to speed transmission and download times. Most
compression algorithms work by removing or replacing redundant information
from text or binary files, such as blank space or often repeated characters.
Picture files are especially suitable for compression, as they often
contain large blocks of colour that can be represented in much simpler ways.
Many picture formats, such as gif and Jpeg, are compressed. |
