an artificially intelligent program
designed to interact with users of online services, especially
chatroom and customer-service applications. Chatbots are not yet gifted
conversationalists, but they are capable of returning simple answers to
simple questions and they can be programmed to return information on
specific subjects. A golf chatbot, for example, might respond to queries
about problems with a golf swing, and a technical support chatbot could
provide useful information for people with hardware or software problems.
The current capabilities of such programs are limited, but researchers
expect that applications like these will become practical in the near
future. Meanwhile, accurate predictions about the evolution of truly
intelligent computers are still hard to find. |
