Bits per second, a measure of the
speed of a network connection; in short, its bandwidth, Modern
internet connections are typically measured in multiples of at least 1,000.
denoted as kilobytes per second (kbps). A standard modern transmits data at
roughly 50kbps, depending on the integrity of the telephone line to which it
is connected. Faster connections such as cable and dsl may achieve
speeds measured in multiple millions of bits (or megabits) per second (mbps)
at their upper limits. The fastest connections of all, based on fibre
optic cables, can now manage data transmission rates of 10 terabits per
second, about 180m times faster than a 56kbps modem. |
