Software for running web servers.
Unlike similar software from giants such as Netscape and
Microsoft, Apache is free, which has led to its rapid adoption by
millions of Websites. A Netcraft survey in February 2003 showed that
63% of Websites polled were running Apache, putting it streets ahead of
commercial products such as Microsoft's IIS (27%).
Apache,
so named because it was originally based on a "patchy" version of an Ncsa
web server, runs on many kinds of computers, including Intel-based
Windows machines and Unix -based systems, and is an important
part of the Open Source movement. Not only is the actual program code
freely downloadable, but so is the editable Source Code, Marketing it
possible for users to customise the software. |
