Page break

The point at which one page ends and another begins. To insert a page break in Microsoft Word, press the Ctrl key and , keeping it pressed down, press the Enter key.

Parallel port

A socket at the rear of a system unit that allows you to connect a printer.

Paste

The insertion into a document of text or other data that has previously been cut or copied.

PC-compatible

Software or hardware that will work on a standard PC.

PCI slot

A spare space inside a PC for extra expansion cards, such as a sound or graphics card.

Peripheral

A device such as a scanner that can be connected to a PC, but is not vital to its function.

Pixel

An individual dot on a computer screen. The number of pixels horizontally and vertically on the screen determines the level of detail and quality of image that can be displayed. This can be set and altered by the user.

Plug-ins

Programs that are needed to open and run certain files, such as video clips or sound files. Web sites often provide plug-ins for visitors to download, so that they are able to view the entire site. See Download.

Point size

Measurement used to describe the size of fonts. For example, this page is in 9 point; newspaper headlines are usually between 36 and 72 point.

Port

A socket at the rear of the system unit that allows users to connect a peripheral device, such as a modem, to the PC.

Printer driver

A piece of software that helps Windows to communicate with the printer, See Driver.

Print preview

On-screen display that shows users exactly how the active document will look when printed.

Processor

The central processing unit (CPU) of a PC, See Chip, CPU.

Program

A product that allows the user to interact with the computer's hardware to perform a specific type to task. For instance, a word processing program allows the user to direct the computer in all aspects of handling and presenting text.

Prompt

A window that appears on screen to remind users that additional information is required before an action can proceed.

Properties

The attributes of a file or folder, such as its creation date and format. Some Properties, such as the author's name, can be altered. To access the Properties window, right-click on an item and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
