| Maximize |
To increase the size of a window so that it fills the entire screen. The Maximize Button is the middle button in the set of three in the top right-hand corner of a window. Once used, this button becomes a Restore button. Click on it to restore the window to its original size. |
| Megabyte (Mb) |
A unit of memory capacity. A single megabytes is 1000 kilobytes, which is equivalent to a 400 page novel. |
| Memory |
A computer's capacity or storing information. See also RAM and ROM. |
| Menu bar |
The line of menu options that runs along the top of a window. When a menu is selected, its entire list of options (a dropdown menu) will be displayed. |
| MIDI |
Musical Instrument digital Interface. A universal standard language by which specially adapted musical instruments communicate with computers, MIDI cable leads are required to connect the instrument to the computer. |
| Minimize |
To reduce a window to a button on the Taskbar. The Minimize Button is the left button in the set of three in the top right-hand corner of a window. To restore the window to the screen, click on its button on the Taskbar. |
| Modem |
A device that converts electronic signals from a computer into sound signals that can be transmitted by phone then reconverted by another modem into the original electronic data. |
| Monitor |
The viewing screen on which you see your computer's files. Images are made up of thousands of tiny dots. |
| Motherboard |
The circuit board which houses a PC's central processing unit (see CPU), some memory and slots into which expansion cards can be fitted. See Chip, Expansion card and Memory. |
| Mouse Pointer |
A small arrow on screen that moves when the mouse is moved. Other representations of the pointer, depending on the program being used and the type of action being carried out, include a pointing hand, a pen and a cross, When you click in a text document, the cursor will appear. See Cursor. |
| Multimedia |
Sound, Images, animated graphics, text and video and all different types of media-means of communicating. A single document using more than one of these is said to be a multimedia document. A computer able to provide and display different mea simultaneously is referred to as a multimedia computer. |
| My Briefcase |
An icon found on the Desktop of any PC running Windows. Duplicate versions of documents places in the briefcase can be transferred to a laptop or other computer to be worked on. When you wish to return the documents to your PC, My briefcase allows your to update the original files on your PC that have been worked on while traveling in the Briefcase. |
| My Computer |
An icon found on any PC Desktop running Windows. Click on the icon to access all the computer hardware present in the system, such as the hard drive (C:), Floppy drive (A:), CD-ROM drive (D:), printer and tools for monitoring and adjusting the system set-up. See Icon |
| My Documents |
A folder icon found on the Desktop. The folder stores the files and documents that have been created by users. See Icon. |
